This week Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) released a new edition of the Oregon Experience on the City of Vanport, its community, accomplishments, and its ultimate destruction in 1948. In addition to being an excellent history of the Vanport community, there is some great documentary footage of the 1948 flood. Watch the episode here:
During the early 1940s, Vanport, Oregon was the second largest city in the state. But on a Sunday afternoon in May 1948, it disappeared completely – destroyed by a catastrophic flood.
